Measles & Rubella Weekly Monitoring Report - Week 14, 2018: April 1 to April 7, 2018

  • In Canada, one new case of measles and no new cases of  rubella were reported in week 14, 2018.
  • Five cases of measles and no cases of rubella have been reported in Canada in 2018.

Epidemiological summary

During epidemiological week 14, 2018 one new confirmed case of measles was reported by the province of Ontario1. The case developed measles symptoms shortly after returning to Canada from Uganda. To date in 2018, a total of five cases have been reported, all imported. No secondary cases have resulted from these importations.

The last rubella case was reported in February 2016.

Laboratory summary

Measles

In 2018, four cases of measles have been genotyped and the genotypes were D8 (n= 4) (Figure 3).

Cumulatively, there have been 4 genotype D8 viruses imported from India in 2018, all with distinct measles N450 sequences.
