Measles & Rubella Weekly Monitoring Report - Week 23, 2018: June 3 to June 9, 2018
- In Canada, two new cases of measles and no new cases of rubella were reported in week 23, 2018.
- Fifteen cases of measles and no cases of rubella have been reported in Canada in 2018.
- Globally, there are large measles outbreaks reported in Europe which have affected a large number of countries. Canadians travelling to Europe are invited to consult the travel health notice for more information.

During epidemiological week 23, 2018 two new laboratory-confirmed cases of measles were reported in Canada1. No cases of rubella were reported. Both cases were reported by the province of Alberta. The first case is a secondary case to an imported case of measles from India reported in week 19. The second case reports no recent travel outside the country and has not been in contact with a confirmed case. The source of exposure is under investigation. Both cases had rash onset during week 22.
To date in 2018, a total of 15 cases have been reported.
The last rubella case was reported in February 2016.

In 2018, 14 cases of measles have been genotyped and the genotypes were B3 (n=4) and D8 (n=10) (Figure 3).
Four recent measles cases were genotyped, three in Alberta and one in Ontario, and all were genotype D8. The Alberta secondary case had an N450 sequence identical to the primary case (an imported case of measles from India reported in week 19). The Ontario case with travel history to Ukraine was identical to the MVs/Gir Somnath.IND/42.16/ WHO named strain (GenBank accession number KY120864).
