Measles & Rubella Weekly Monitoring Report – Week 32: August 4 to August 10, 2019
- In Canada, four new cases of measles and no new cases of rubella were reported in week 32, 2019.
- Currently, there are five active Footnote 1 cases of measles in Canada.
- Eighty-eight (88) cases of measles and no cases of rubella have been reported in Canada in 2019. These cases were reported by Québec, British Columbia, the Northwest Territories, Ontario, Alberta, New Brunswick, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.
- Globally, there are large measles outbreaks which have affected a large number of countries. Canadians travelling outside of Canada are invited to consult the travel health notices for more information.

During epidemiological week 32, 2019 four new confirmed cases of measles and no new cases of rubella were reported in CanadaFootnote 2. All cases were reported by the province of Quebec and had rash onsets in week 32. The first case was exposed either in Quebec or while travelling to New York State. The second and third cases had no history of travel outside of Quebec but are from the same community as the first case. The fourth case was exposed while travelling to Cambodia. To date in 2019, 88 cases of measles and no cases of rubella have been reported. The last case of rubella was reported in 2016 and the last case of congenital rubella syndrome/infection was reported in September 2018.

In 2019, sixty-six (66) cases of measles have been genotyped and the genotypes were B3 (n=18) and D8 (n=48), both of which are circulating globally.
In week 32, one measles case was genotyped. Genotype B3 was detected in a case reported by the province of British Columbia, with rash onset in epidemiological week 30 and travel history to the Philippines.
