Epidemiological Summary:

During epidemiological week 33, 2019 no new confirmed cases of measles or rubella were reported in Canada^{Footnote 2}. To date in 2019, 88 cases of measles and no cases of rubella have been reported. The last case of rubella was reported in 2016 and the last case of congenital rubella syndrome/infection was reported in September 2018.

Laboratory Summary

Measles

In 2019, seventy (70) cases of measles have been genotyped and the genotypes were B3 (n=18) and D8 (n=52), both of which are circulating globally.

In week 33, four measles cases were genotyped.  All cases were reported by the province of Quebec and had rash onset in week 32. The first case was exposed either in Quebec or New York State. The second and third cases had no history of travel outside of Quebec but are from the same community as the first case. The fourth case was exposed in Cambodia. All four cases had measles genotype D8 identified, identical to the WHO named strain MVs/Gir Somnath.IND/42.16/ (GenBank accession number KY120864), which is circulating globally.
