Measles & Rubella Weekly Monitoring Report – Week 17: April 23 to April 29, 2023

Key points:

  • In Canada, one new case of measles and no new cases of rubella were reported in week 17, 2023.

Epidemiological summary

During epidemiological week 17, 2023, one new case of measles and no new cases of rubella were reported in CanadaFootnote 2. The case was reported by the province of Ontario and is epidemiologically linked to a travel related case with recent travel history to India. The case had rash onset in epidemiological week 18.

To date in 2023, six cases of measles and no cases of rubella have been reported. The last case of rubella was reported in December 2019. The last case of congenital rubella syndrome/infection was reported in September 2018.

Laboratory summary

Measles

During epidemiological week 17, 2023, the measles genotype was identified for one case that had been reported in epidemiological week 16. The case had a recent travel history to India and the genotype was D8, which is endemic in the area.

To date in 2023, Five (5) cases of measles have been genotyped and the genotypes were B3 (n=2) and D8 (n=3).

Epidemiological weeks for laboratory specimens submitted to the National Microbiology Laboratory are assigned and reported in accordance with WHO guidelines (WHO.WER.2012;9(87):73) with week 1 beginning on the first Monday of the year, which for 2023 is January 02. However, for the purposes of this report, the genotype data is presented in accordance with PAHO reporting weeks with week 1 of 2023 beginning on January 01, 2023.
