Epidemiological summary
During epidemiological week 34, 2023, 1 new case of congenital rubella syndrome and no new cases of measles or rubella were reported in Canada.Footnote 2 The case was reported by the province of Ontario, and the case is in a newborn whose mother acquired the infection in Kenya. The risk of disease transmission in Canada has been deemed to be low.
To date in 2023, 7 cases of measles, 0 cases of rubella and 2 cases of congenital rubella syndrome have been reported. The last case of rubella was reported in December 2019.

Epidemiological weeks for laboratory specimens submitted to the National Microbiology Laboratory are assigned and reported in accordance with WHO guidelines (WHO.WER.2012;9(87):73) with week 1 beginning on the first Monday of the year, which for 2023 is January 02. However, for the purposes of this report, the genotype data is presented in accordance with PAHO reporting weeks with week 1 of 2023 beginning on January 01, 2023.

Rubella and Congenital rubella syndrome/infection
During epidemiological week 34, 2023, the genotype was identified for one congenital rubella syndrome case that had been reported in epidemiological week 33. The case is a newborn whose mother acquired the infection in Nigeria.
To date in 2023, 1 congenital rubella syndrome case has been genotyped and it was genotype 1G.
