Grievance Case Summary - G-311
G-311
In the course of a move, the appellant rented a car for 11 days after arriving at his new position because he did not yet have access to his own car, which would be delivered to him later on. The RCMP agreed to reimburse his rental costs for two days only. The appellant maintained that an RCMP financial services official had told him in advance that the RCMP would pay the rental costs for a car, but the official in question denied having made this statement.
ERC Findings
The appellant was unable to demonstrate that he had prior approval from the RCMP to rent a car. Neither the fact that he did not have access to his own car during that period nor the fact that he reduced his accommodation expenses by choosing to stay with his parents can per se make the RCMP responsible for reimbursing his car rental costs.
Committee's Recommendation of November 7, 2003
The grievance should be dismissed.
Commissioner of the RCMP Decision dated July 19, 2004
The Commissioner agreed with the findings and recommendations of the Committee and denied the grievance.
