About the assessment

The WST is a standardized test that assesses English or French spelling, grammar, vocabulary, punctuation and capitalization and sentence sequencing.

This test has the following five subtests:

Subtest 1 - Spelling

This subtest has 20 questions and contains two sections.

In the first section, you must choose the misspelled word from the list.

In the second section, you must choose the correctly spelled word from the list.

Subtest 2 - Grammar

This subtest has 25 questions and is divided into two sections.

The first section has two types of questions. For one type, you must choose the option which improves the sentence or part of the sentence that is indicated in bold. In the other type, you must choose the sentence that is grammatically correct.

In the second section, you are given an initial sentence and four rewritten sentences which have similar meanings. You must choose the rewritten sentence that is most grammatically correct and has the same meaning as the original sentence.

Subtest 3 - Vocabulary

This subtest has 25 questions and is divided into two sections.

In the first section, you must choose the word that has the same meaning as the word in bold.

In the second section, you must choose the word that best fits in the blank portion of a sentence.

Subtest 4 - Punctuation and capitalization

This subtest has 16 questions. You are given sentences that may contain errors in punctuation or capitalization. You must choose the sentence that is correct or the one that has no errors.

Subtest 5 - Sentence sequencing

This subtest has 20 questions. You are given four sentences, which you must rearrange in the most logical sequence to create a well-organized and clear paragraph.

For each question there are four possible answers and you must choose the answer that you think is correct. Each correct answer is worth one point. No points are deducted for incorrect answers.

Additional information

To prepare for the test, you may find it useful to review textbooks on grammar, sentence structure, and writing techniques.

Although equivalent, the English and French versions of the Writing Skills Test are not direct translations of the other. As the principles of grammar are different between the two languages, it would not be appropriate to create the test in one language and then create a direct translation of it in the other language.
