Help with filing webform N15, Excise Tax Act application for refund/rebate (RE program)
Before you file
Use the webforms to file an N15 application for refund/rebate. The webforms will let you:
- apply online for a refund
- validate data in real time and to correct errors reported by an error message before
- calculate totals
- print or save a PDF version of your confirmation page
- securely send an N15 application for refund/rebate over the Internet
Have your paperwork and other documents ready.
For security reasons, our servers end a N15 webforms session after 18 minutes of inactivity. If your session ends, you will have to reauthenticate yourself and re-enter your data.
Subsection 68(1) of the Excise Tax Act specifies that we will not pay a refund unless you apply within two years of the day you paid the amount.
How to file
Fill out the application for refund/rebate
Period covered
Start date (YYYY–MM–DD): Enter the first day of the period covered by this application for refund/rebate.
End date (YYYY–MM–DD): Enter the last day of the period covered by this application for refund/rebate.
If you receive this error message “91776 – You cannot electronically file a return/refund for this period. Please refer to the Help section for more information,” you must enter more recent period dates or send a paper return to:

Reason for Refund
You can choose only one reason for refund for each application for refund/rebate.
If you choose ‘Export of vehicles’ and claim one or more amounts under the ‘Fuel-inefficient vehicles (green levy) and air conditioners’ section, you must also fill out form ‘N15-1, Excise Tax Act – Application for Refund/Rebate, Supplementary Information’. This form will display for you to fill out and send.
If you choose “Other reason”, please explain why in the space provided.

Claimed amounts

Motive fuels
Enter the total number of litres in the Quantity field. To calculate the Amount claimed, multiply the quantity by the corresponding excise tax rate or click “Calculate” for the following:
- Diesel fuel
- Leaded gasoline (except leaded aviation gasoline)
- Unleaded aviation gasoline
- Leaded aviation gasoline
- Aviation fuel
- Unleaded gasoline
Calculate: Calculates the Total motive fuels amount.

Fuel-inefficient vehicles (green levy) and air conditioners
Air conditioners: Enter the number of air conditioners in the Quantity field. To calculate the Amount claimed, multiply the quantity by the corresponding excise tax rate or click “Calculate.”
Fuel-inefficient vehicles: Enter the number of fuel-inefficient vehicles in the Quantity field. To calculate the Amount claimed, multiply the quantity by the corresponding excise tax rate or click “Calculate” for the following:
- If at least 13 but less than 14L/100 km: Vehicle consumes at least 13L but less than 14L per 100km.
- If at least 14 but less than 15 L/100 km: Vehicle consumes at least 14L but less than 15L per 100km.
- If at least 15 but less than 16 L/100 km: Vehicle consumes at least 15L but less than 16L per 100km.
- If 16 or more litres per 100 kilometres: Vehicle consumes 16 or more litres per 100km.
Calculate: Calculates the Total FIV and air conditioners amount.

Pages B-RE-N15-04/05/06/07/08/09/10 correspond with sending supplementary information form N15-1. Enter the supplementary information only when the Reason for refund is “Export of Vehicles”, and you are claiming amounts for one or more commodities under the “Fuel-inefficient vehicles (green levy) and air conditioners” section. Add a vehicle
Vehicle information
You must enter the following information:
- Make
- Year
- Model
- VIN
- Litres/100 km – Automobiles that have a weighted average fuel consumption rating of 13 or more litres per 100 kilometres will be subject to the excise tax
- Air conditioner – Choose "Yes" if you are claiming air conditioning on this vehicle and "No" if you are not
- Amount claimed
Add this vehicle: Choose this button to add and save the vehicle information.
Cancel: Choose this button if you do not want to enter vehicle information.

Review/Modify details
If you completed the supplementary information portion of the return (screens B-RE-N15-04 through B-RE-N15-08), all of the information entered will be displayed and protected in the following sections:

If modifications or additions need to be made to the information, this can be done by using the following:
Modify purchased from: Choosing this button will open the "Modify details" screen (B-RE-N15-04). Make all necessary changes and then choose "Done."
Modify exported to: Choosing this button will open the "Modify details" screen (B-RE-N15-05). Make all necessary changes and then choose "Done."
Modify broker: Choosing this button will open the "Modify details" screen (B-RE-N15-06). Make all necessary changes and then choose "Done."
Modify vehicle details: Choosing this button will open the "Modify details" screen (B-RE-N15-08). Make all necessary changes and then choose the "Done."
Finished: Choose this button after all details have been reviewed and modifications are complete to take you to the next step.

Supplementary information
Review the supplementary information on this screen to ensure that it is correct. If modifications or additions need to be made, this can be done by choosing from the following:
Add details: Choosing this button will open the "Add details" screens (B-RE-N15-04/05/ 06/07), so more supplementary information can be added.
Modify selected details: Choose a row and select this button to open the "Modify details" screen (B-RE-N15-09). Once there, choose the applicable button in order to modify the Purchased from, Exported to, Broker, or Vehicle details.
Delete selected details: Choose the applicable row and select this button to delete supplementary information.

Refund options
Choose the following option that describes how you want your refund issued or applied:
- I want to receive the refund by cheque or direct deposit: Choose this option if you want us to send you a refund cheque or to direct deposit your refund directly into your bank account.
Direct deposit is the fastest way to get your money. It is also reliable, secure and convenient. Go to Direct deposit and enrol today.
- Transfer amount: Choose this option if you want to transfer the refund or a part of the refund to another filing period or Canada Revenue Agency account. If choosing this option, enter the following information:
- Amount – the dollar amount to be transferred
- Account number – 15-digit account number where the amount is to be transferred to
- Period ending (YYYY–MM–DD) - the filing period the amount is to be transferred to

Summary
You will see a summary of your completed application for refund/rebate. Check all of your data and make any changes before sending your application for refund/rebate. If you find an error, click “Previous” to make corrections.
If you entered vehicle details on page B-RE-N15-08, you will only see rows showing the data you entered. If you added rows that did not include any data, you will not see those rows.
Certification statement: You must tick the box certifying that the information you provided is accurate and complete before you can click “Submit”, otherwise the application for refund/rebate will not be sent.

Submit: Automatically sends the application for refund/rebate to the Canada Revenue Agency. You will then see a confirmation page.
Confirmation
The confirmation page gives details of your refund information, along with the filing date and confirmation number of the application for refund/rebate.
Keep the confirmation number for your records. Do not send us a paper copy of the documents you filed online.
Print: Prints the confirmation page.
View in PDF: You can save and print a copy of this application for refund/rebate in PDF format.
File another refund: Returns you to the first page so you can file another refund for the same account.
Correct errors
If you make an error while filling out your N15 application for refund/rebate, you will see an explanatory error message above the field that contains the error.
Correct all errors before going to the next page in the process. You will not be allowed to send your application for refund/rebate until you correct all errors.
After you have corrected all the errors, click “Next”.
After you file
Confirmation number
You will receive a confirmation number after you have corrected all errors and sent your application for refund/rebate for processing. This confirmation number means that the Canada Revenue Agency received your refund application.
You can save or print a copy of the confirmation page and the completed N15 application for refund/rebate for your records. To print a copy of the confirmation page, click “Print.” To save a copy of the completed N15 application for refund/rebate, click "View in PDF."
Do not mail us a paper copy of the refund application(s) you filed online.
After we receive your submission
We may contact you to verify your supporting documentation. This does not mean you are being audited. It is simply part of our process for all paper and electronic applications for refunds/rebates.
Email notifications
Most correspondence is only available online in My Business Account by default, except when a business has changed its delivery method to receive paper mail. Business owners registered in My Business Account can add an email address to receive notifications when their Canada Revenue Agency mail is available to view in their secure online account, and when other important changes are made to their account. To register, select “Profile” then “Manage notification preferences” and follow the steps.
Troubleshooting N15 online applications for refund/rebates
Why can't you change your browser setting while you are in a secure session?
Do not modify your browser setting while in a secure N15 webforms session because it may cause your browser to freeze or the session to end.
The secure webpages for the N15 application for refund/rebate do not display properly. Why?
Several factors can affect how these pages will display on your system. Try the following:
- Use the default browser settings.
- Maximize your browser window.
- Close the Favorites window.
- Use the browser's Reload or Refresh button.
- Make sure you have enough RAM for your browser's requirements.
You were away from your computer for 30 minutes. Can you still complete your application for refund?
