Authorize my representative – enter information
Authorize my representative is a service that let's you authorize a representative. The representative can then deal with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) for you. Some examples of a representative are a family member, a friend, or an employee of a tax services business.
Authorizing your representative online will give your representative instant, secure access to information and services. Your representative will need this to help you with your income tax and benefit information.

- RepID - It is a 7-character alphanumeric code that the Canada Revenue Agency assigns to identify a representative when they register with the Represent a Client service. You will use this code to authorize that individual to be your representative. Once authorized, your representative can deal with the CRA for you.
- GroupID - It is a 6-character alphanumeric code, beginning with a G, that the Canada Revenue Agency assigns to identify a group of representatives when they register with the Represent a Client service. You will use this code to authorize that group to be your representative. Once authorized, your representative can deal with the CRA for you.
- Business Number (BN) - It is a 9-digit identification number that the Canada Revenue Agency assigns to identify a business. The business owner will be asked to enter this BN during the process of registering their business with the Represent a Client service. Once the business is registered, you can use the BN to authorize that business and all of its employees to be your representative.
You will be able to view, cancel, or change any authorization that was granted using a RepID, a GroupID or a BN, at any time, by accessing the link "Authorize my representative" found on the My Account home page.
Your representative will not have access to the following information and services:
- change my address
- view my address
- view direct deposit information
- authorize my representative
- view authorized representatives
Authorize my representative – verify information
This screen displays the information that your representative entered when they registered with the Represent a Client service. You should verify the information, including the RepID, the GroupID or the Business Number (BN). If you have any questions about what is being displayed, please contact your representative as only they can confirm this information.
If you agree with what is being displayed select "Continue".
Authorize my representative – authorization level
You must select the level of authorization you want to give your representative. This is a mandatory entry.
Level 1 means that the CRA may disclose the following to your representative:
- information given on your tax return
- adjustments to your tax return
- information about your registered retirement savings plan (RRSP), Home Buyer's Plan (HBP), and Lifelong Learning Plan (LLP)
- your accounting information, including balances, payments on filing, and instalments or transfers
- information about your benefits and credits. For example: the Canada Child Tax Benefit (CCTB) and the goods and services tax/harmonized sales (GST/HST) tax credit.
- your marital status. This does not include information related to your spouse or common-law partner.
Level 2 means that the CRA may disclose and accept changes.
The CRA may disclose the information listed in level 1 to your representative, and your representative may ask for changes to your account. Such changes include:
- adjustments to income, deductions, and non-refundable tax credits
- accounting transfers
Entering an expiry date is optional. If you want your representative to have access to your information for a specified period of time, you should choose an expiry date. If no date is entered, this authorization will stay in effect until you cancel it.
Authorize my representative – review
This screen displays the details of your authorization. You should review the level of authorization and the expiry date if one was selected. If you agree with the authorization details, select "I agree".
You can change or delete this authorization at any time by accessing the "Authorize my representative" link found on My Account.
Authorization complete
Your representative has been successfully authorized and can now deal with the Canada Revenue Agency for you online, by phone, in writing, or in person. You can view, update, or delete this authorization at any time by accessing the "Authorize my representative" link found on My Account.
View or update this Authorization
This page lets you view the details of your representative's authorization, which includes your representative's name along with either their RepID, in the case of a group, their GroupID, or in the case of a business, the Business Number (BN).
Tax years
Because this authorization was granted using a RepID, a GroupID or a BN, "All" is displayed under the heading tax years.
Level of authorization
This column shows the level of authorization you chose when you authorized this representative.
Expiry date
This column displays the expiry date that you chose when you authorized this representative. If you did not choose an expiry date, it will display "does not expire".
You can change or delete this authorization at any time by accessing the "Authorize my representative" link found on My Account.
Representative authorization – modify
You can change either the level of authorization, the expiry date, or both for this representative's authorization. If you currently have an expiry date for this representative, and all you want to change is the level of authorization, you will have to re-enter the expiry date in the spaces provided.
Representative authorization – review
The authorization will not be updated until you agree with the changes you have made.
Representative authorization – confirmation
You have successfully changed the authorization. To view the changes you have made, select "Authorize my representative".
Delete representative – review
If you choose to delete this authorization, your representative will no longer be able to deal with the Canada Revenue Agency for you online, by phone, in writing or in person. If you want this individual as your representative at a future date, you will have to re-authorize them using their RepID, their GroupID or the Business Number (BN) if your representative was a business.
Delete representative – confirmation
You have successfully deleted this representative's authorization to deal with the Canada Revenue Agency for you. This representative will no longer be displayed on your list of representatives.
If you have accidentally deleted this representative, you will have to re-authorize them using their associated RepID, GroupID, or Business Number (BN) if your representative was a business. If you have misplaced your representative's RepID, GroupID or BN, you will have to contact your representative. For privacy reasons, no one at the Canada Revenue Agency can supply you with this information.
