Application processing times

We’ll process your application and send you a decision letter by mail.

Allow enough time for your application to be processed before following up with us.

Regular processing: 120 days

Priority processing:

Terminal illness: 5 days

Grave condition: 30 days

Priority processing is for those that are eligible only.

When processing may take longer

  • You did not submit all required documents
  • If we ask for more information

What your letter could include

Approved application:

  • the amount you will receive each month
  • the date of your first payment

Denied application:

  • the reason your application was denied

Request for more information:

  • we may need more information to continue processing your application

Check your application status online

After a decision is made, your application status will be updated in My Service Canada Account (MSCA).

If you applied by mail, consider registering for MSCA now. This will allow you to check your application status and access other services online.

Ask to reconsider the decision

You have 90 days from the date you receive your decision letter to ask for a reconsideration of the decision.

If someone is helping you communicate with Service Canada

You can authorize another person to communicate with Service Canada on your behalf by signing in to your My Service Canada Account and selecting the "Give consent to communicate on my behalf" link.

This does not give someone consent to:

  • Apply for benefits on your behalf
  • Change your payment address
  • Request or change the withholding of tax
