Canada Pension Plan disability benefits: How much you could receive

How much you could receive

The Canada Pension Plan (CPP) disability benefit is a monthly payment.

What's not covered

CPP disability benefits do not cover medications, medical devices, or other health costs. You may wish to explore what health coverage or supports are available through your province or territory.

How we calculate your CPP disability payment

The amount of your total monthly CPP disability payment is made up of 2 parts:

  • Basic monthly amount (2025): $598.49
  • Additional amount: based on how much you've contributed to the CPP during your working years
Maximum and average payment amounts
Maximum monthly payment amount (2025) $1,673.24
Average monthly amount for new beneficiaries (as of April 2025) $1,210.27

The maximum and average amounts are not guaranteed. Your actual benefit amount may be different depending on your contribution history.

CPP pension and benefits amounts

Adjustments that increase payment amounts

  • Cost of living increases: Each January, benefit amounts are increased to reflect any increases in the cost of living (benefit amounts do not decrease if the cost of living goes down)
  • CPP enhancement: Since 2019, contribution rates have gradually increased, leading to monthly increases in the maximum CPP disability benefit

Receiving multiple CPP pensions and benefits

  • CPP disability benefit    CPP survivor's pension:
    • You will receive a combined, single monthly payment
    • The maximum amount is $1,683.57 (January 2025)
  • CPP retirement    CPP survivor pension, then granted CPP post-retirement disability benefit:
    • You will receive the higher basic amount of either the survivor or post-retirement disability benefit, not both

Disability income from other sources

You may still be eligible for the CPP disability benefit if you receive disability income from other sources such as a private insurer or a provincial/territorial program.

Please note, that these other sources of income may change their payments if you are approved for the CPP disability benefit. You should contact your insurance company or social assistance program for details about your case.
