Advancing environmental literacy across Canada

Environmental literacy leads to the knowledge and skills needed to address the most pressing challenges of our time. It is a powerful yet often overlooked tool to address climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. Beyond the benefits to the planet, environmental literacy also contributes to a more prepared workforce, a stronger economy, and more resilient, happier and healthier communities.

To advance environmental literacy across Canada, we have worked alongside its partners and stakeholders to develop the National Framework for Environmental Learning. The Framework offers practical guidance and best practices to support educators, policy makers and other leaders in the formal and non-formal education sectors to initiate or build upon existing environmental literacy efforts. It also supports Canada's ability to report on its international and domestic commitments to environmental education.

We are collaborating with partners and stakeholders to develop an implementation strategy that will include targets and measures for success.

The Framework is an evergreen document that will be reviewed at regular intervals and adjusted to reflect emerging best practices and findings.
