Closed consultation: Proposal to amend the list of maximum residue limits for veterinary drugs in foods - Proposed MRL 2021-1

This consultation ran from October 13, 2021 to December 27, 2021.
Health Canada sought comments on a proposal to amend the List of Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) for Veterinary Drugs in Foods (the List).
Health Canada's Veterinary Drugs Directorate (VDD):
- ensures the safety of foods produced in Canada from food-producing animals treated with veterinary drugs
- approves veterinary drugs for sale in Canada by conducting scientific reviews
- sets standards such as MRLs in the tissues and food products from food-producing animals
- foods containing veterinary drug residues up to the established MRL levels are safe for human consumption
The directorate conducts public consultations before Health Canada makes these changes to the List:
- establishes new MRLs
- updates current MRLs
To meet Canada's international trade obligations, Health Canada also notifies the World Trade Organization of the consultation on the proposed MRLs.

Health Canada's VDD will engaged with:
- industry
- general public
- food animal producers
- veterinary associations
- veterinary professionals
- Canada's trading partners
- other government departments
Goals of the consultation
The goal of the consultation was to get your comments on the Proposed MRL 2021-1.
After the consultation, we will:
- address any of your scientific or safety concerns before we finalize the MRLs
- post a final notice to amend the list of MRLs with the effective implementation date
What happens after the consultation
Following the consultation, Health Canada will:
- address any scientific or safety concerns before we complete the MRLs
- send a final notice to amend the list of MRLs on Canada.ca with the effective implementation date
