Final Notices to Amend the List of Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) for Veterinary Drugs in Foods

Further to the Proposals to Amend the List of MRLs for Veterinary Drugs in Foods, the following are Health Canada’s Final Notices to Amend the List of MRLs for Veterinary Drugs in Foods.

January 19, 2024

This is a Final Notice regarding Health Canada's List of MRLs for Veterinary Drugs in Foods, further to the consultation for Proposed MRL 2023-1. Feedback was received from a range of stakeholders, including veterinary drug manufacturers, and international and provincial regulatory counterparts. Comments were received related to understanding Health Canada’s MRL review process, alignment of Canadian MRLs with international partners, the impact of proposed MRLs on previously established withdrawal periods, and on interest in establishing MRLs for additional species. Health Canada has responded directly to the stakeholders to address their comments. A number of comments were received on the proposed MRLs for dexamethasone and the impact on the withdrawal period for existing products on the market, which requires further discussion, hence, the MRL for dexamethasone is planned to be adopted at a later time.

August 26, 2022

This is a Final Notice regarding Health Canada's List of MRLs for Veterinary Drugs in Foods, further to the consultation for Proposed MRL 2021-1. Feedback was received from a range of stakeholders, including veterinary drug manufacturers, international and provincial regulatory counterparts. Comments were received related to understanding Health Canada’s MRL review process, on alignment of Canadian MRLs with international partners, establishment of “No MRL Required” for certain veterinary drugs, the impact of proposed MRLs on previously established withdrawal periods and on interest in establishing MRLs for additional species. Health Canada has responded directly to the stakeholders to address their comments. No changes have been made to the Proposed MRL 2021-1 list as a result of the feedback received.

This is a Final Notice regarding Health Canada's List of MRLs for Veterinary Drugs in Foods, further to the consultation for Proposed MRL 2020-1. Feedback was received from a range of stakeholders, including producer associations, and international regulatory counterparts. Comments that were received related to understanding Health Canada’s MRL review process, on alignment of Canadian MRLs with international partners and on interest in establishing fenbendazole MRLs for sheep. Health Canada has responded directly to the stakeholders to address their comments. No changes have been made to the List as a result of the feedback.

This is a Final Notice regarding Health Canada's List of MRLs for Veterinary Drugs in Foods. No comments were received on the consultation for Proposed MRL 2018-1.

August 2, 2017

This is a Final Notice regarding Health Canada's List of MRLs for Veterinary Drugs in Foods, further to the consultation for Proposed MRL 2016-2: Veal. Feedback was received from a range of stakeholders including producer associations, veterinarians, and industry.  Comments that were received related to, for example, product access and the ongoing need for alignment with international partners. Health Canada has responded directly to these stakeholders to address their comments, and based on the feedback, no changes have been made to the List.

February 15, 2017

This is a Final Notice regarding Health Canada's List of MRLs for Veterinary Drugs in Foods, further to the consultation for Proposed MRL 2016-1. Comments were received from two stakeholders regarding the research process for establishing MRLs and any potential human health impacts. Health Canada has responded directly to these stakeholders to address their comments, and no changes have been made to the List.

August 28, 2015

This is a Final Notice regarding Health Canada's List of MRLs for Veterinary Drugs in Foods, further to the consultations for Proposed MRL 2014-1 and Proposed MRL 2014-2. No concerns were raised by interested parties on Proposed MRL 2014-2.

A Final Notice regarding Proposed MRL 2014-1, with the exception of Lasalocid MRLs, was published on February 13, 2015. Concerns were raised by certain stakeholder on the proposed MRL for lasalocid of 0.03 ppm in the muscle of chickens and turkeys, as residues higher than the proposed MRL could remain in muscle under recommended conditions of use without any safety concern. After a re-evaluation of the proposed MRL based on the safety profile of this drug, Health Canada has established an MRL of 0.1 ppm in the muscle of chickens and turkeys. This MRL for lasalocid will ensure adequate public safety, and avoid potential residue violation under recommended conditions of use.

February 13, 2015

This is a Final Notice regarding Health Canada's List of MRLs for Veterinary Drugs in Foods, further to the consultation for Proposed MRL 2014-1. Proposed MRLs for lasalocid will not be implemented at this time to take into consideration comments received during the consultation period. For all other proposed MRLs, no concerns were raised by interested parties.

February 13, 2014

This is a Final Notice regarding Health Canada's List of MRLs for Veterinary Drugs in Foods, further to the consultations for Proposed MRL 2013-1 and Proposed MRL 2013-2 where no concerns were raised by interested parties.
