Frequently asked questions
Which Act should I submit my request under?
If you are looking for SSC records, apply under the Access to Information Act.
If you are looking for information about yourself, apply under the Privacy Act.
Can I make an access to information request?
In order to make an access to information request, you must either be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident or have an address in Canada.
Corporations, businesses and organizations with a Canadian presence have the right to make an access to information request.
Can I make a privacy request?
Yes, you may request your own information.
SSC is primarily an internally facing service and typically does not collect information about members of the public. If you have not been employed by or directly interacted with SSC, it is unlikely SSC has information about you. Consider if your request should be directed to Service Canada (served by Employment and Social Development Canada).
What should I include in my request?
Please provide a detailed description of the records you are seeking and include a date range, if possible. If you have information that could assist us in locating the records, such as a solicitation number, please specify it.
Can I obtain all the information the government has about me by submitting a request to your department?
Both the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act only permit us to release information that is under the control of this department. If you need information from a different federal department, such as Service Canada (served by Employment and Social Development Canada), you will need to contact them directly. Please refer to the list of Access to Information and Privacy Coordinators.
Please note that you have a right to request your personal information. However, some information may be withheld in specific cases, in accordance with the Privacy Act.
Remember, the Acts only apply to federal government organizations. If you require information from provincial or municipal departments, you will need to contact them directly.
How long does it take to get the information I requested?
We have 30 calendar days in which to respond to a formal request. However, if the record search is complex, the request involves a large number of records, or consultations are required, we can extend the time to complete the request. If more time is needed, you will be advised of the extension.
How will my response package be sent to me?
Your package will be provided in PDF format via Canada Post Connect.
I have received a response package and I am not satisfied with the results. What are my options?
We encourage you to contact our office about your concerns. You also have the right to submit a formal complaint to the Commissioners regarding the processing of your request.
For Access to Information Act complaints, please submit a complaint to the Information Commissioner of Canada.
For Privacy Act complaints, please submit a complaint to the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
