Providing unions with employees’ home contact information

The Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat (TBS) has agreements in place to provide five unions with their members’ home contact information. This will allow unions  to fulfil their duties, such as collecting strike votes, in accordance with the Federal Public Sector Labour Relations Act.

It is in the best interests of employees who are union members to ensure that their union can contact them. If an employee has any concerns with this agreement, they should contact their union.

The cost of the human resources system in place to provide this information to the unions has been absorbed by the unions, at no cost to the taxpayer.

Participating unions

The unions who have agreements in place are:

  • Canadian Association of Professional Employees
  • Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada
  • Public Service Alliance of Canada
  • Association of Justice Council
  • The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers

What information is shared

The employer only provides the participating unions with their members’:

  • family and given names
  • home mailing addresses
  • home phone numbers
  • individual Agency Numbers, which uniquely identifies each bargaining unit member

How employees’ contact information is shared

Employees are encouraged to proactively provide their contact information to their union. TBS endeavours to provide or update unions with employees’ home contact information on a quarterly basis.
