The Office of the Federal Ombudsperson for Victims of Crime does not handle immigration or refugee matters. Our mandate is limited to issues affecting victims and survivors of crime that fall under Canadian federal jurisdiction, including rights under the Canadian Victims Bill of Rights, victim rights under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and access to federal victim-related programs and services. While we can provide general information to Canadians who have been victimized outside Canada, we cannot become involved in crimes that occur outside Canada. We have no authority over foreign criminal justice systems, proceedings, or decisions made by foreign governments or authorities.
