Proposed benefit increase

The Government of Canada has proposed to increase the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (formerly the GST Credit) by 25% for five years starting in July 2026.

In addition, a one-time top-up payment equal to 50% of the 2025-26 value has also been proposed. The one-time payment would be paid in spring, no later than June 2026.

The goods and services tax/harmonized sales tax (GST/HST) credit is a tax-free quarterly payment for individuals and families with low and modest incomes to help offset the GST or HST they pay. It may also include payments from provincial and territorial programs.
