Formal learning: mandatory, required and developmental
Federal departments and agencies offer a variety of learning formats and have various learning requirements for employees.
The Canada School of the Public Service (CSPS) is the official supplier of common curriculum for the Government of Canada, offering courses at no individual costs to learners. Employees can create their own account on GCcampus, the CSPS online learning platform, to explore various courses that are available online, or to register for in-person sessions, as applicable.
The CSPS also has a Digital Academy that aims to help Public Servants keep pace with the digital transformation happening around us. They have created Busrides.ca, which contains short episodes on digital topics that appeal to multiple learning styles.
At ACOA, there is a strong learning culture. It is expected that your will take charge of your learning and career development and seek opportunities to continually learn and grow in order to be the best you can be in your current job and prepared for career development opportunities.
You will discuss your learning needs with your manager and make a plan to complete these activities using the Continuous Learning Plan (CLP) tool, which you will have access upon arrival at the Agency.
Required/Mandatory Learning at ACOA
Every department has a list of “required training” depending on your position (student, non-management, supervisor/manager or executive, etc.) as well as the type of work you do. You will be receiving an email with the list of the required training associated with your role/position during your first weeks at ACOA. Examples of required/mandatory training include:
- Authority Delegation Training
- Government of Canada Orientation
- Occupational Health and Safety
- Values and Ethics Foundations
- Security Awareness
The Government of Canada tries to accommodate and balance learning needs with learning styles. Formal learning, typically to augment project or job-related skills or help with career development is available through the CSPS. Other learning opportunities not offered by the CSPS may be pursued through external learning organizations and internal workshops, with approval from your manager.
