Government of Canada investments in the 2017 Canada Summer Games

The Government of Canada has provided multiple contributions to this year’s edition of the Canada Games through various programs including the Sport Canada Hosting Program. All in, funding will ensure the Canada Games provide Canadians with improved recreational infrastructure, unforgettable Canada 150 celebrations, and showcase our commitment to support our athletes from playground to podium. All of these elements and more during the 2017 Canada Summer Games will inspire our next generation of high performance athletes and encourage all Canadians to get active.

Support for the 2017 Canada Summer Games includes:

  • $10.35 million over 3 years - announced June 19, 2015:
  • $1.5 million from the Canada 150 Fund for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and festivals program;
  • $393,800 from the Canada 150 program for infrastructure projects;
  • $105,000 in funding through the Canada Arts Presentation Fund to support the festivals program; and,
  • Over $588,000 in value-in-kind from the Department’s regional office in Winnipeg for the use of office space.  

Funding for the Canada Games Council:

  • Over $6 million in funding for the transportation costs of provincial/territorial teams, other than the host province of Manitoba

The funding from the Canada Arts Presentation Fund will be used for the highly anticipated Canada Games Festival, which will showcase talent from across the country during the Games.
