24 Canadians died in the terrorist attacks in the United States on September 11, 2001, and hundreds of planes carrying thousands of passengers were diverted to Canadian airports after the US closed its airspace following the attacks.

25th anniversary of space mission STS-100: first spacewalk by a Canadian astronaut

STS-100 was a mission to the International Space Station (ISS) flown by Space Shuttle Endeavour that installed the Canadarm2 robotic arm on the ISS. Chris Hadfield served as Mission Specialist 1 and became the first Canadian to perform a spacewalk.

50th anniversary of Canada hosting its first Olympics

The 1976 Summer Olympic Games were held in Montréal, Québec.

75th anniversary of Canada’s first Cold War NATO deployment to Europe

The 27th Canadian Infantry Brigade was initially deployed to Hannover, Germany. It was attached to the British Army of the Rhine under the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to protect allies and to maintain peace in the region during the Cold War.

100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Legion

The Legion was founded as The Canadian Legion of the British Empire Service League in Winnipeg in 1925. It was incorporated by a special Act of Parliament and was issued its Charter in July 1926. In 1960, Queen Elizabeth II assented to the prefix “Royal,” which was added to create its current name: The Royal Canadian Legion.

150th anniversary of the passage of the Indian Act

The Indian Act, still in force to this day, is the primary document that defines how the Government of Canada interacts with the 614 First Nation bands in Canada and their members.

150th anniversary of Treaty 6

Treaty 6 was signed by Crown representatives and Cree, Assiniboine and Ojibwe leaders at Fort Carlton and Fort Pitt in Saskatchewan. The treaty boundaries extend across central portions of present-day Alberta and Saskatchewan.

300th anniversary of the Peace and Friendship Treaties

The process, which began in December 1725 in Boston, ended Dummer’s War. It was the first of a series of Peace and Friendship Treaties that were signed and renewed over the decades that followed.
