Strategic Environmental Assessment

The Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces are committed to ensure that activities and operations are conducted in an environmentally sustainable manner. Defence environmental policy recognizes that the responsible stewardship of the assets with which we are entrusted is not only a moral obligation but also an operational imperative.

In response to a 2004 report of the Commissioner of Environment and Sustainable Development, the Department of National Defence continues to work towards implementing Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) to comply with the Cabinet Directive on the Environmental Assessment of Policy, Plan and Program Proposals. Departmental guidance regarding project approvals and environmental assessment were amended to include and communicate the SEA Cabinet Directive requirements.

In 2012-13, Defence initiated the development of a tracking system to track all proposals subject to the Cabinet Directive. The content for a training module to educate managers and staff who are involved in the preparation of policy, program, and plan proposals was developed.
