Appendix 3 – Alert Bar to the Special Service Medal (SSM)
- The ALERT bar was created on 26 November 1992.

His Excellency the Governor General in Council, on the recommendation of the Prime Minister, pursuant to subsection 4(3) and section 5 of the Special Service Medal Regulations,
- repeals Order in Council P.C. 1995-2003 of November 28, 1995;
- determines that an activity consisting of an aggregate of 180 days of the following service is special service that merits recognition:
- honourable service performed on the posted strength of Canadian Forces Station (CFS) Alert or with a military force operationally deployed to CFS Alert, since it began its operation on September 1, 1958; or
- honourable service performed by an eligible civilian employed at CFS Alert under conditions of employment similar to those referred to in subparagraph (i); and
- specifies that the Bar that is awarded with the Special Service Medal, representing the special service referred to in paragraph (b), is to bear the word “ALERT”.
