24.12.0 Five types of special benefits
24.12.1 Introduction
The types of special benefits accessible to all entitled claimants, regardless of whether they are requesting benefits under EI, EI fishing or EI special benefits for the self-employed are: sickness, maternity, parental, compassionate care and family caregiver benefits. Self-employed residents of Québec are only eligible for EI sickness, compassionate care and family caregiver benefits, given that maternity and parental benefits are offered to them through the Québec Parental Insurance Plan. In this chapter, each benefit type is dealt with separately, commencing with sickness benefits. Special benefits for the self-employed mirror, to the extent possible, other special benefits, however there are some distinct differences. Accordingly, they are presented below as they relate directly to self-employment claims, for ease of reference.
