About the National School Food Program
The Government of Canada is committed to ensuring that every generation of children and youth have access to the resources and support they need to reach their full potential. This starts with ensuring that children get the healthy food they need to learn and succeed.
This is why, through the National School Food Program, the Government is investing $1 billion over 5 years to work with provinces and territories and Indigenous partners to enhance and expand school food programs across Canada, guided by the National School Food Policy.
The Government of Canada’s school food commitments
The Government of Canada is investing $1 billion of federal funding over 5 years to deliver the National School Food Program. This funding allows for:
- bilateral funding agreements with provinces and territories
- funding for school food initiatives on First Nations reserves and for First Nations, Inuit and Métis Modern Treaty and Self-government Agreement Holders
- funding for eligible Indigenous partners to carry out engagement and capacity-building activities related to school food
This federal funding adds to other funding for school food programs, including from:
- provinces and territories
- Indigenous communities
- charities and civil society organizations
The Government of Canada is building on these existing efforts by working collaboratively with its partners to enhance and expand school food programs across Canada.
This work is being guided by the National School Food Policy. The Policy outlines the federal government’s vision for the National School Food Program, as well as the guiding principles and key objectives that will support progress towards this vision.
