Additional amount of Canada Education Savings Grant - Overview

1. Overview

The additional amount of Canada Education Savings Grant (Additional amount of CESG) is money provided by the Government of Canada for Canadian children from low-income and middle-income families. This money is added to a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) to help a child receive the maximum grant amount.

This amount is in addition to any money they might be getting from the basic amount of the Canada Education Savings Grant (Basic CESG).

Like the Basic CESG, the money from the Additional amount of CESG can be used after high school to help pay for either full-time or part-time studies:

  • in an apprenticeship program;
  • at a CEGEP;
  • at a trade school;
  • at a college; or
  • at a university.

Note: If a child does not attend school after high school, the grant money deposited in the RESP will be returned to the Government of Canada.
