Eric Van Lochem: Operational Meteorologist

“It’s exciting to think that Canadians will be reading our forecasts and planning their lives around something that we’ve created.”
Meet Eric Van Lochem.
Eric Van Lochem has worked with Environment and Climate Change Canada for over 3 years. He first joined the Meteorological Service of Canada in 2018 through an internship course, where he made lasting friendships and developed the knowledge and skills necessary to launch his career as an Operational Meteorologist.
“I’ve been interested in weather since I was 6 years old and always dreamed of becoming a meteorologist,” says Eric. “The idea of being able to forecast weather for a living always appealed to me, and having realized that goal really motivates me to put in my best effort.”
Eric has seen many exciting advancements in weather technology over the years. He recalls when he graduated 10 years ago, dual-polarization weather radar was still in its infancy and satellite imagery was only available every 15 minutes.
“Meteorology is a very technology-driven field, and thus, the pace of change in this profession is often rapid,” he explains. “Now, we can get that imagery every minute, and dual-polarized radars are being installed across the country.”
Eric looks forward to observing future advancements in his field, and to making a positive impact on the world through his work. “I get to contribute to the world through something I’m passionate about and strive to be better at. I couldn’t imagine working anywhere else as a meteorologist in Canada.”
