Share and view ideas: Consultation on proposed Regulations prohibiting the Manufacture and Import of Lead Wheel Weights in Canada
From: Environment and Climate Change Canada
Current status: closed
Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) was seeking input on the Prohibiting the Manufacture and Import of Wheel Weights Containing Lead in Canada Regulations.
This consultation ran from July 3, 2021 to September 11, 2021
Background
Lead is currently the most common material used in wheel weights to balance a vehicle’s tires. During regular use, wheel weights routinely fall off the vehicle and eventually break down into lead dust. Without action, it is expected that lead will continue to be used in wheel weights in Canada and therefore pose a risk to human health and ecosystems from lead exposure.
The Government of Canada is developing the Regulations to prohibit the manufacture and import of lead wheel weights that contain more than 0.1% by weight of lead destined for use in Canada. This approach will prevent new wheel weights containing lead from entering the Canadian market, thereby progressively phase out Canadian wheel weight stocks. Accordingly, we anticipate an elimination of lead wheel weights lost on Canadian roads within 5 years after these regulations come into force.
