Consultation on Dodecylguanidine Hydrochloride and Its Associated End-use Products, Proposed Re-evaluation Decision PRVD2022-16

Health Canada is consulting Canadians on the proposal to continue registration of all products containing dodecylguanidine hydrochloride registered for sale and use in Canada, with proposed label updates.

Dodecylguanidine hydrochloride is registered in Canada to control slime-forming bacteria and other microorganisms that form problematic biofilms on the surfaces of equipment in contact with process waters in pulp and paper mills, cooling towers, and air washers. Dodecylguanidine hydrochloride is a non-oxidizing alternative in biofilm control and acts as a surfactant to break up biofilm then kills isolated bacteria via membrane disruption. Dodecylguanidine hydrochloride is found in co-formulation with n-alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride or methylene bisthiocyanate in currently registered products.

With respect to human health and the environment, risks were shown to be acceptable when dodecylguanidine hydrochloride is used according to proposed conditions of registration, which includes new mitigation measures to reduce potential exposure to occupational workers and exposure to the environment.

For a full list of products containing dodecylguanidine hydrochloride, please consult Appendix I in the Proposed Re-evaluation Decision or visit the Pesticide Label Search database.

For more information on the proposed decision open the "Proposed Re-evaluation Decision".
