Summary

The Consumer Product Safety Program (CPSP) administers and enforces the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act (CCPSA) and its regulations.

The purpose of this Compliance Verification (CV) project was to verify industry's compliance of playpens and accessories sold with playpens with the requirements of the Playpens Regulations (Regulations).

For this project, compliance of select playpens and accessories sold with playpens was determined through a sampling and testing process by which Health Canada inspectors visited establishments online and in-person and sampled relevant products. Compliance with the requirements listed under the Regulations was then verified through testing at the Product Safety Laboratory.

Prior to initiating inspections, the CPSP carried out a market survey to determine the presence of playpen and playpen accessories available for sale in Canada. Targets for testing were then selected from that list of companies. Companies identified during the market survey were also sent a compliance education letter regarding playpen mattress pad and floor pad requirements.

Over the course of the 2021-2022 fiscal year, mechanical, chemical and flammability testing of 14 different products was carried out. All 14 samples tested were imported products. The testing resulted in 4 recalls, 4 stop distributions and 6 commitments to address non-compliance.
