Summary
The Consumer Product Safety Program (CPSP) administers and enforces the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act (CCPSA) and its regulations.
The purpose of this Compliance Verification (CV) project was to verify industry’s compliance of cradles and bassinets with the mechanical and flammability requirements of the Cribs, Cradles and Bassinets Regulations.
For this project, compliance of select cradles and bassinets was determined through an evaluation process where Health Canada inspectors visited establishments both online and in-person and sampled and visually inspected relevant products. Compliance with the requirements listed under the Regulations was verified through testing at the Product Safety Laboratory and by Health Canada inspectors at the time of inspection.
Prior to initiating inspections, the CPSP carried out a market survey to determine the presence of establishments selling, importing, or manufacturing cradles and bassinets in Canada. Targets were then selected from that survey.
Over the course of the 2023-2024 fiscal year, mechanical and flammability testing and visual evaluation of 16 different products was carried out, where all samples tested and evaluated were imported products. The testing and evaluation resulted in 6 recalls, 1 stop sale, 5 stop distributions and 3 trader commitments to address non-compliance. There was 1 instance where no corrective action was required.
