Background
On September 29, 2024, Baxter International (Baxter US) announced that its North Cove manufacturing facility in Marion, North Carolina, was damaged by flooding caused by Hurricane Helene. This U.S. facility mainly manufactures intravenous and peritoneal dialysis solutions.
Baxter US is working to assess the extent of the damage and plans to restore operations as quickly as possible.
As soon as Health Canada learned about the impact of the hurricane, we worked with Baxter Canada to:
- assess the potential impact on Canada's hospitals and their patients
- determine which drugs may be at risk of a shortage
Baxter Canada confirmed that a limited number of Canadian drugs come from this U.S. facility. Although inventories of these drugs are currently healthy, Baxter Canada has recommended that health systems take measures to conserve available supplies. Baxter Canada has also issued communications to its customers about the North Cove situation.
As a precautionary measure, Baxter Canada has taken measures to preserve the current supply and guard against stockpiling.
Customers, such as hospitals, may contact Baxter Canada for more information.
What we’re doing
We are communicating with Baxter Canada and other stakeholders regularly to keep up to date on this evolving situation. As always, we continue to work with all stakeholders to mitigate the impact of any actual or anticipated shortages.
Ensuring people have access to the drugs they need when they need them is our top priority. We will continue to keep you informed.
