New service standards for claims for exemption under the Hazardous Materials Information Review Act
As previously communicated in the January 2024 issue of the WHPP newsletter, new service standards for confidential business information (CBI) claims for exemption under the Hazardous Materials Information Review Act (HMIRA) take effect on April 1, 2024.
Adjusted fees for claims for exemption under the Hazardous Materials Information Review Act
The annual adjustment to the fees for claims for exemption under the HMIRA comes into effect on April 1, 2024.
Fees are subject to an annual adjustment in accordance with the Service Fees Act. On April 1 of each calendar year, fees are adjusted using the April All-items Consumer Price Index for Canada, as published by Statistics Canada for the previous fiscal year.
The summary of the annual adjusted fees table has been updated.
2024-25 workplan
The Workplace Hazardous Products Program (WHPP) will focus on the following priorities during the 2024-25 fiscal year:
- Increasing transparency of inspection information
- Strengthening compliance promotion through the publication of additional hazardous substance assessments
- Advancing work on key regulatory and policy files, such as implementation of the amended Hazardous Products Regulations (HPR)
- Ongoing international leadership, including participation in the United Nations Sub-Committee of Experts on the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS, collectively UNSCEGHS) and in the Canada-U.S. Regulatory Cooperation Council
Reminder: Common Online Payment System now available
As a reminder, claimants filing a claim for exemption under the HMIRA may now send fees online via credit card using the Common Online Payment System.
Rescheduled to fall 2024: Multi-stakeholder workshop
The 2024 WHPP multi-stakeholder workshop has been rescheduled from spring to fall 2024.
This workshop is an important engagement opportunity for all groups within the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) community, and we want to maximize its utility by leveraging the availability of more substantive updates by fall 2024 (for example, variances between the amended HPR and the United States Hazard Communication Standard).
We are also aware that many of you are participating in other ongoing Government of Canada consultations (for example, A Right to a Healthy Environment). We hope that moving the workshop to the fall will facilitate your meaningful engagement on these initiatives throughout the summer.
As we remain committed to open and transparent stakeholder engagement, we will continue to issue general Program updates via this quarterly WHPP newsletter. We also invite you to request a bilateral meeting should you have an urgent topic to discuss.
Please stay tuned for details regarding the timing of the fall 2024 WHPP multi-stakeholder workshop. Recognizing that this workshop is an excellent opportunity to engage the full WHMIS community, we encourage industry, labour, other levels of government and any other interested group to lead discussion topics. Please send proposed agenda items by July 2, 2024, including any relevant contact information for the individual(s) who would lead the discussion topic.
