Notice of Modification to the List of Permitted Food Additives with Other Accepted Uses to enable the use of L-Lysine Monohydrochloride in certain processed snack foods

Background

Health Canada's Food Directorate completed a premarket safety assessment of a food additive submission seeking approval for the use of l-lysine monohydrochloride in certain processed snack foods to inhibit acrylamide formation during their manufacture. The results of the premarket assessment support the safety and efficacy of l-lysine monohydrochloride for its requested use.

Health Canada's Proposal to Enable the Use of l-Lysine Monohydrochloride in Certain Processed Snack Foods [Reference Number: NOP/ADP-0032] was published on May 13, 2019. The proposal was open to the public for comment for 75 days.

No comments were received during this period. Consequently, Health Canada has enabled the use of l-lysine monohydrochloride described in the information document below by modifying the List of Permitted Food Additives with Other Accepted Uses, effective November 6, 2019.

The purpose of this communication is to publically announce the Department's decision in this regard and to provide the appropriate contact information for any inquiries or for those wishing to submit any new scientific information relevant to the safety of this food additive.
