Notice of Modification to the List of Permitted Sweeteners to Enable the Use of Advantame as a Sweetener in Certain Unstandardized Foods Including Certain Beverages – Reference Number: NOM/ADM-0092

Background

Health Canada's Food Directorate completed a detailed safety assessment of a food additive submission seeking approval for the use of advantame as a sweetener in certain unstandardized foods, including unstandardized beverages.

Because this is a food additive that was not previously permitted for use in Canada, Health Canada published a Notice of Health Canada's Proposal to Enable the Use of a New Food Additive, Advantame, as a Sweetener in Certain Unstandardized Foods Including Certain Beverages - Reference Number: NOP/ADP-0022. The proposal was published on October 27, 2016, and was open to the public for comments for 75 days. No new scientific information was submitted to the Department during the comment period in response to this Notice of Proposal.

As no safety concerns were raised through Health Canada's assessment the Department has enabled the food additive use of advantame as described in the information document below by updating the List of Permitted Sweeteners, effective April 19, 2017. The purpose of this communication is to publically announce the Department's decision in this regard and to provide the appropriate contact information for any inquiries or for those wishing to submit any new scientific information relevant to the safety of this food additive.
