A New Perspective on the Health of Canadians (Lalonde Report) (1973-1974)

In June 1973, the Minister of the former Department of National Health and Welfare asked the Department of Health to develop a new direction for future health care policy. The policy document, or "green paper" as policy papers were named then, was produced in the Department.

Report

The final paper, A New Perspective on the Health of Canadians: a Working Document which came to be known as the Lalonde report, was presented in the House of Commons on April 1, 1974. The paper identifies two main health-related objectives: the health care system; and prevention of health problems and promotion of good health. It proposes integrating these two aspects of health in health care policy development, and details five main strategies and 74 proposals to meet this objective.

Print copies are available at some public libraries, depository libraries throughout Canada, and some university libraries.
