How to get a police certificate – Colombia
If you need to give your fingerprints for a police certificate, this isn’t the same as giving your biometrics (fingerprints and photo) for an application.
Name of the document you need
Background Verification Certificate
Police certificate and IRCC requirements
You don’t need to provide a police certificate with your application.
We’ll send you a file number and a letter requesting a police certificate after you send your application for:
- permanent residence
- citizenship
- some temporary residence programs
You must bring the file number and letter when you apply for a police certificate.

Do not apply for the Background Verification Certificate until you receive a file number from the Canadian visa office and instructions telling you to apply for the certificate.
You’ll need to send a scanned copy of your ID card (Cédula de Ciudadanía o de Identidad) and a signed consent form (given by the service provider) authorizing them to send the Background Verification Certificate to the Canadian visa officer.
Service providers will send us your Background Verification Certificate directly. You won’t receive a copy of this document, and the IRCC visa office will translate this document on your behalf.
Please submit the original confirmation email received from the service provider indicating that you have applied for a Background Verification certificate as part of your IRCC application.
