Update your application (submit new information we didn’t request)
If you have an application in progress with us, you may need to:
- update your application if something in your life changes
- send us a new document or new information to support your application (that we didn’t request)
You won’t see these updates in your account. If you’re an authorized person managing an application for someone, follow these instructions for them.

We have different instructions for submitting documents and information that we requested.

Keep your application information up to date
If you have an application in progress with us, you must tell us when a change in your life affects the information in your application. We need up-to-date information to properly review and decide on your application.
You can also submit a new document or information if:
- you have a new document or information that supports your application (that wasn’t available when you applied)
- you want to add a representative to, or remove one from, your application
- you made an error on your application or forgot to include a document or some information
- We may return your application as incomplete if you forget a required document. If this happens, you may be able to apply again and include the document you forgot.
Electronic travel authorization (eTA) applicants: Send new documents only if we request them from you.
Do you need to update your contact information?
We have different instructions depending on whether you’re updating your phone number, mailing address, or email.
Examples of information changes (updates) to report
You must report the following types of changes:
- changes that may affect your eligibility, including those related to your:
- job situation
- education
- language skills
- marriage, separation or divorce
- a new child (birth or adoption)
- the death of an applicant, a sponsor (if you have one), or a family member listed on your application
- a new passport
- If you applied for an electronic travel authorization (eTA) and you get a new passport, you must apply for a new eTA.
- significant changes to your health
- new criminal charges or convictions
- a legal name change (how to change your name with IRCC)
- your country or territory of residence has changed
Include proof of any change when you report it.
Submit new information through our web form
Use our web form to update your application or submit a new document or some information that we didn’t request.
Under Tell us about your request:
- select No, I want to add the document(s) to support or complete my application
- explain what you’re submitting and why you’re submitting it in the text box
- upload the document or proof of the change you’re reporting
Special instructions for some permanent residence applications
If you applied for permanent residence to a pilot program not listed in the web form
Follow these steps if the pilot program you applied to is not listed in the web form:
- Under What did you apply for?, select Permanent residence.
- Under What application did you submit?, select Federal skilled worker.
- Under Is your application being processed outside Canada?:
- select No if:
- you applied to the Agri-Food Pilot or the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP), or
- you were in Canada or the United States when you applied to:
- the Rural Community Immigration Pilot (RCIP)
- the Francophone Community Immigration Pilot (FCIP)
- the Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program (AIPP)
- select Yes if you were outside of Canada or the United States when you applied to:
- the Rural Community Immigration Pilot (RCIP)
- the Francophone Community Immigration Pilot (FCIP)
- the Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program (AIPP)
- select No if:
- Under Tell us about your request, include the name of the pilot program you applied to.

In the web form, under Tell us about your request, include this code: SD2023
Submit new information in the IRCC Portal – New version
You can submit new documents or information directly in your account if you used the IRCC Portal – New version to apply for a visitor visa, super visa or Canadian passport.
Steps to submit your information in the IRCC Portal – New version
- Sign in to your IRCC Portal – New version account.
- Find your application on the Overview page and click View application.
- Scroll down and click Upload a document under “Manage application”.
- Click Choose files under “Document upload” and find the document (on your device) that you want to upload.
- Review the file details, then click Next.
- Sign the declaration by entering your given name (first name) and surname (last name or family name), then click Submit document.
- Read the confirmation message, then return to your application.
You can find a summary of the additional documents you submitted in your account message centre.
Submit new information another way
Submit by email, mail or fax
You can submit new documents or information to us by email, mail or fax only if the letters or messages we send you say that you can. Follow the instructions we give you.
If we don’t tell you that you can submit by email, mail or fax, you must submit your information another way.
Special instructions for some applications
Family members of Canadian victims of air disasters
Send us your updated information by email and add this to the subject line: VAD
Permanent residence for foreign nationals who were in state care
Send us your updated information by email and add this to the subject line: FN/State Care
Permanent residence for Ukrainian nationals with family in Canada
Send us your updated information by email and add this to the subject line: UAC4
Submit through Canada Post Connect
Only pre-removal risk assessment applicants can use Canada Post Connect to:
- tell us if their situation has changed
- update their information
Change the program you applied to
If you applied to the wrong program, or you want to change the program you applied to, you must:
- request to withdraw your original application
- complete and submit a new application for the new program and
- pay the fees for this new application
When you request to withdraw your original application, you may get a refund for some or all of the fees you paid.
