If you missed the test
Find out what to do if you didn’t take the test either during the 30-day period provided in your invitation or when it was scheduled.
Online test
You missed your first test the first time we invited you
If this is the first time we invited you, but you missed the test, we’ll automatically send you a new invitation. You still have 3 chances to pass the test within the new 30-day period.
You missed a second test invitation
If this is the second time we invited you, and you didn’t take your test, email the address in the “Rescheduling” section of your test invitation and provide
- a detailed explanation of why you need to reschedule the test
- your application number
- your unique client identifier (UCI)
If you missed the test twice and didn’t contact us, we’ll abandon (stop processing) your application. You’ll have to start the application process over if you want to apply for citizenship again.
In-person or on Microsoft Teams test
You missed your first test
If this was the first time we invited you to the test and you missed it, you have 2 options:
- contact us
- wait for us to reschedule your test
Option 1: Contact us (recommended)
Send an explanation within 30 days of your missed test date to the email address in the “Rescheduling” section of your test invitation. In your email, include
- a detailed explanation of why you need to reschedule the test
- your application number
- your unique client identifier (UCI)
You can also send your explanation by mail to the office that scheduled your test if you don’t have an email address. Check your test invitation for the address of that office.
We’ll use the postmark date on your envelope as the date you sent your explanation.
After you contact us, we’ll send you a new invitation.
- If your reason is valid, the new invitation will count as your first invitation.
- If your reason is invalid, the new invitation will count as your final invitation.
Option 2: Wait for us to reschedule you
We’ll automatically reschedule your first test if
- you didn’t contact us to explain why you missed it previously, or
- you contact us, but your reason for missing the test is invalid
We’ll send you a final invitation with the rescheduled date (usually 2 weeks after the date of your missed test).
We may stop processing your application if you miss it again.
You missed your second test
If you missed your test, you need to contact us (option 1).
If you contact us and give a valid reason for missing the test, we’ll send you a final invitation. We may stop processing your application if you miss it again.
If we stop processing your application and you still want to become a Canadian citizen, you must reapply and pay the fees again.
