Getting ready for the test

Citizenship tests are 45 minutes long. Once the timer starts, you won’t be able to stop it. After 45 minutes, your test will be submitted automatically, even if you’re not finished. You’ll get a warning when you have 5 minutes left.

Before you start the test, make sure you’re prepared.

Get your identification (ID)

Get a piece of ID, for example

  • your permanent resident card (even if it’s expired) or
  • a valid (not expired) piece of ID with your photo and signature on it (for example, a driver’s licence or health card)

Use the right devices and browsers

You must take the test

  • on a desktop computer, laptop or tablet with a webcam
  • using a Chrome or Safari Web browser

Do not take the test

  • on a mobile phone
  • using Chrome on an iPad
  • on a Microsoft Surface Pro
  • on a virtual private network (VPN)

Pick a good test location

The test location must have good lighting so our system can see you clearly through your webcam. You can take the test in a public library or with a public computer.

You don’t need to be in Canada to take the online test.

Taking the test

While you’re taking your citizenship test, we’ll use your webcam to take random photos to confirm your identity and ensure you’re working alone. We’ll compare these photos with your test photo and the ones from your application.

If there are technical issues or signs of cheating, your test may be invalid. We’ll follow up and ask you to take the test again.
