How we process your application

After you send your application, we’ll

  • check that it’s complete
  • assess it to confirm
    • you met your residency obligations
    • you’re still a permanent resident of Canada

In some cases, we’ll ask you to attend an interview to get more information.

If we approve your application, we will

  • email you with instructions on how and where to submit your valid passport or travel document
  • return your passport to you with your permanent resident travel document

If we refuse your application, follow the instructions on the refusal letter.

Keep your information up to date

If you move or change your address, phone number or any other contact information after you apply, tell us using our web form.

Using a representative

You don’t need a representative to help you with your PRTD application. Using a representative is a personal choice.

If we ask you for documents

We may ask you to submit more documents. If we do, submit them to us online.

  1. Go to our web form.
  2. Click on Update or ask about your application.
  3. Under Add a document to your application, click the Continue to form button.
  4. Make sure you fill in these required fields correctly:
    • What is your application number?
      • You can find your application number at the top of the letter we sent you.
    • Under What did you apply for?, choose Permanent Resident Travel Document.
    • Under What application did you submit?, choose Urgent.
  5. Under Upload your document(s), choose the documents you want to send to us.
  6. Follow the steps to submit your web form.

How to check your application status

If you have a question about your application, check our Help Centre first.
If you can’t find an answer:

  1. Go to our web form.
  2. Click on Update or ask about your application.
  3. On Check your application status, click the See details button to continue to the form.
  4. Make sure you fill in these required fields correctly:
    • What is your application number?
      • You can find your application number at the top of the letter we sent you.
    • Under What did you apply for?, choose Permanent Resident Travel Document
    • Under What application did you submit?, choose Urgent.
  5. Follow the steps to submit your web form.
