Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) does not take sufficient account of federal policy requirements in its funding of First Nations agencies to operate child welfare services, says the Auditor General of Canada, Sheila Fraser, in her Report tabled today in the House of Commons. Government policy requires that services to First Nations children on reserves meet provincial standards, be reasonably comparable with services to children off reserves, and be culturally appropriate.

Crown corporations have improved their key systems and practices since 2000, when her Office last reported on them, says Sheila Fraser, the Auditor General of Canada, in her Report tabled today in the House of Commons.
The Auditor General released a report in the House of Commons on May 6, 2008, and one of its chapters looks at infectious disease surveillance in Canada. The report acknowledges the complexity of disease surveillance, recognizes the positive steps the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has taken in improving surveillance in Canada, and highlights areas where more progress needs to be made.
Corporal Michael Starker, of 15 Field Ambulance, was killed today and another soldier was injured when they came under enemy fire during a patrol in the Pashmul region of the Zharey district. The soldiers were immediately evacuated by helicopter to the Canadian-led multinational hospital at Kandahar Airfield, where one soldier was pronounced dead. The other soldier is in fair condition and stable. The incident occurred at about 11:45 a.m. Kandahar time. The families of both members have been notified.
