Today, the Government of Canada recognized seven lawyers in the federal public service as Queen's Counsel (Q.C.). Formally styled "Her Majesty's Counsel learned in the law," the federal Q.C. honours lawyers who demonstrate exemplary service to the Canadian justice system.


Government of Canada Highlights Royal Assent of Bill To Help Law Enforcement Protect Victims Of Online Crime

Today, at a roundtable of professionals who work closely with child and youth victims of crime, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada Peter MacKay ¿ joined by Minister of Veterans Affairs and honourary member of the Canadian Crime Victim Foundation Julian Fantino ¿ discussed ways of better protecting children and youth from online crime. The Ministers discussed how Bill C-13, the Protecting Canadians from Online Crime Act, will give police the modernized tools they need to protect Canadians, in particular children and youth, from acts of cyberbullying. As well, they discussed child protection and victims' rights. York Regional Police Deputy Chief André Crawford also participated in the roundtable. Bill C-13 received Royal Assent yesterday and will come into force in March 2015.


Government of Canada Announces $20 Million to Help Victims Leave Prostitution

Today, Justice Minister and Attorney General of Canada, Peter MacKay announced that the Protection of Communities and Exploited Persons Act will come into force on December 6. The new criminal law provisions, together with new funding of $20 million to support programming for those who want to leave prostitution, provides a comprehensive approach to assisting victims of sexual exploitation and protecting Canadians from the harms of prostitution.


Minister of Justice Refers Murder Case to the Manitoba Court of Appeal

Federal Government Renews Funding for Legal Education Projects

Today, the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, announced renewed funding to the Continuing Education Division of the Université de Saint-Boniface under the Access to Justice in Both Official Languages Support Fund. He made the announcement at an event at the university accompanied by the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, and Regional Minister for Manitoba, the Honourable Shelly Glover.
