Members of the Advisory Council members must include one expert from each of the following National Collaborating Centres Thematic Areas: Aboriginal Health, Determinants of Health, Environmental Health, Healthy Public Policy, Infectious Diseases Methods and Tools. 

Members also include national and global public health practitioners, and experts in the field of synthesis and knowledge translation.

Dr. John Frank

Professor John Frank has 30 years experience as an epidemiologist and teacher of public health professionals at the graduate level, in three countries. He is currently responsible for the only knowledge transfer unit in Scotland serving the Public Health policy and practice communities, having previously emphasized that aspect of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research’s mandate as inaugural Scientific Director if it’s Institute of Population and Public Health from 2000 to 2008.

Dr. Andre Corriveau

Dr. Corriveau is currently the Chief Public Health Officer for the Northwest Territories, a position which he also held from 1997 to 2009.  Since April 2012, he has also served as the Provincial/Territorial Co-chair for the Pan-Canadian Public Health Network Council.  Prior to that he was the Chief Medical Officer of Health for Alberta Health & Wellness from March 2009 to May 2012.  He has also previously worked for 1 year in Nova Scotia and 8 years in Nunavik. Dr. Corriveau received his degree in medicine from McGill University and completed a residency in community medicine as well as a Master in Business Administration at Laval University.

Dr. David McQueen

Dr. McQueen’s extensive expertise has been garnered through over forty years of work in academia (John Hopkins; University of Edinburgh), the US government, such as Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and in non-governmental organizations such as the International Union of Health Promotion and Education (IUHPE).  Dr. McQueen has expertise in: the social determinants of health; health promotion; the philosophy of science; evidence and evaluation, and surveillance.  He helped establish and led the US behavioural risk factor surveillance system at CDC; established and leads the global programme on health promotion effectiveness of the IUHPE; and continues to advise and consult with numerous government and international agencies on non-communicable diseases and health promotion.

Dr. Gilles Paradis

Dr. Paradis is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Occupational Health at McGill University and Medical Consultant at the Public Health Institute of Quebec. He is the Founding Scientific-Director of the Quebec Population Health Research Network and Scientific-Editor of the Canadian Journal of Public Health as well as the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Chair in Applied Public Health Research. His chief interests are in childhood precursors of chronic disease risk and in community-based prevention of chronic diseases.

Dr. James Irvine

Dr. James Irvine is a public health and preventive medicine specialist and is the Medical Officer of Health for three northern health regions covering the northern half of Saskatchewan. He is a Professor with the University of Saskatchewan in the Department of Family Medicine and an associate faculty member with the Department of Community Health and Epidemiology and the School of Public Health. Dr Irvine is involved with public health with special emphasis on Aboriginal health, environmental health, communicable disease control and health promotion.

Dr. Louise Potvin

Dr. Louise Potvin is an expert in health promotion and in population health intervention research.  Her work is mainly focussed on the evaluation of community-based programs to reduce health inequalities.  She is also currently working on program implementation models and theory.

Dr. Malcolm King

Dr. Malcolm King, a member of the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation (Ontario), is a Professor and health researcher in the Department of Medicine at the University of Alberta, focusing on respiratory diseases. Currently Scientific Director of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Institute of Aboriginal Peoples’ Health, he leads the development of a health research agenda aimed at improving wellness and achieving health equity for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples.

Dr. Megan Ward

Dr. Megan Ward is Associate Medical Officer of Health at Peel Public Health, one of Canada’s largest local public health departments.  In practice as a community medicine specialist for more than 20 years, Dr Ward leads a ten year strategic direction for Peel in evidence-informed decision making, an organization-wide transformation of how a local health department brings research evidence to public health practice. Dr Ward was awarded an EXTRA Fellowship from the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation in 2008, focusing on this transformation.

Dr. Nancy Edwards

Dr. Nancy Edwards is a community health nurse and epidemiologist.  She is a Distinguished Professor at the University of Ottawa.  In 2008, she was appointed Scientific Director, Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Institute of Population and Public Health.  Her research interests and publications address multi-strategy and multi-level interventions in community health and examine approaches to successfully translate this knowledge into action.

Dr. Noni MacDonald

Dr. Noni MacDonald is a Professor of Paediatrics and Computer Science at Dalhousie University with a clinical appointment in Paediatric Infectious Diseases at the IWK Health Centre in Halifax Canada. She is a former Dean of Medicine at Dalhousie University. She has long been recognized in Canada as an advocate for children and youth health and as a leader in paediatric infectious disease.

Dr. Richard Stanwick

Dr. Stanwick is a specialist in pediatrics, public health and preventive medicine. Formerly a University professor, he is the Chief Medical Health Officer for the Vancouver Island Health Authority. Dr. Stanwick has contributed to the fields of injury control and smoking prevention as well as promoting healthy public policy at the local, provincial and national levels.

Mr. Ron de Burger

Ron de Burger has been involved in public health in Canada since 1964 in various capacities. He has extensive experience as a teacher and academic administrator at the college and university level.  He served as Assistant Deputy Minister, Preventive Services in British Columbia and as a Senior Consultant in the Health Protection Branch at Health Canada. He is currently the Director of Healthy Environments in Toronto Public Health. He has been President of both the Canadian Public Health Association and the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors.
