About the Canadian Breast Cancer Initiative (CBCI)

The CBCI is a program that supports national standards for breast cancer prevention, early detection and screening, and research and community initiatives to share best practices in breast cancer and women's health and to make education resources available to communities.

The CBCI has worked since 1993 to reduce the incidence of breast cancer, its mortality rate, and to improve the lives of women who have the disease. The CBCI was renewed in 1998 and, in 2004, moved from Health Canada to the Centre for Chronic Disease Prevention and Control in the Public Health Agency of Canada.

The CBCI has a Community Capacity-Building (CCB) funding program to help community groups participate in breast cancer support and enhance their ability to provide information and support to people affected by breast cancer. Through knowledge development and sharing, intersectoral collaboration, and stakeholder involvement, the Community Capacity-Building funding program aims to create the conditions that increase action on breast cancer and women's health.

The Community Capacity-Building funding program originated from the information exchange pilots that operated between 1993 and 1998 in all five regions of the country (Atlantic, Quebec, Ontario, Prairies and Northwest Territories, and BC/Yukon). These pilots facilitated the collection and dissemination of breast cancer information and helped women with breast cancer make informed decisions. Between 2004 and 2008, funding focused on strengthening networks in all provinces and territories across the country. The 2008 – 2010 and 2010 – 2012 funding continues to focus on these networks to serve as a resource to the community of Canadians affected by breast cancer. The funding also focuses on topics of particular significance such as supporting breast and women's health and underserved communities, such as rural and remote areas.
