How many cases of Japanese encephalitis are there?

In 2012, the World Health Organization estimated 67,900 Japanese encephalitis cases annually.

Largely as a result of immunization, the incidence of Japanese encephalitis has been declining in:

  • Japan
  • Nepal
  • Vietnam
  • Thailand
  • Sri Lanka
  • the Republic of Korea
  • some regions of China

However, transmission of the virus remains unaffected by immunization, and non-immunized individuals remain at risk.
