Epidemiological summary
During epidemiological week 11, 2024, 10 new cases of measles and no new cases of rubella were reported in CanadaFootnote 2. 9 cases were reported by the province of Quebec: 1 case was imported with recent travel outside of Canada; and 8 cases acquired the infection in Quebec . Of these 9 cases, 2 were children and 7 were adults. 1 case was vaccinated, and 8 cases were either unvaccinated or had an unknown vaccination status. All cases had rash onset between epidemiological weeks 7 and 11, excluding one case without a rash.
1 case was reported by the province of Ontario. The case was imported and was an unvaccinated infant with recent travel to Iraq. Rash onset occurred in epidemiological week 11.
To date in 2024, 36 cases of measles and 1 case of congenital rubella syndrome/infection have been reported. The last case of rubella was reported in September 2023.

Infants with CRS are considered infectious until they are at least 1 year old or until 2 clinical specimens obtained 1 month apart are negative for rubella virus by RT-PCR, either real-time or conventional; culture is also acceptable.
Laboratory summary
Measles
During epidemiological week 11, 2024, the measles genotype was identified for 8 cases that were reported in epidemiological weeks 10 and 11: 6 cases reported by the province of Quebec; and 2 cases reported by the province of Ontario. All 6 cases in Quebec were secondary cases: 5 cases were epidemiologically linked to a case with recent travel to Mauritania (all genotype B3); and 1 case was epidemiologically linked to a case with recent travel to Morocco (genotype B3). The 2 cases in Ontario were imported with recent travel to Mexico and India (all genotype D8). Overall, genotype B3 was detected in 6 cases and genotype D8 in 2 cases.
To date in 2024, 26 cases of measles have been genotyped; 20 were B3 and 6 were D8.

Epidemiological weeks for laboratory specimens submitted to the National Microbiology Laboratory are assigned and reported in accordance with WHO guidelines (WHO.WER.2012;9(87):73) with week 1 beginning on the first Monday of the year, which for 2024 is January 1. However, for the purposes of this report, the genotype data is presented in accordance with PAHO reporting weeks with week 1 of 2024 beginning on December 31, 2023.
