Change my return

Change my return is a service that allows you to request a change to your Income Tax and Benefit return once you've received your Notice of Assessment or Notice of Reassessment. The online format follows the format of the T1 General Income Tax and Benefit paper return.

Select year

You can change up to ten of your tax returns, which include the current and nine prior years. Select the year you want to change from the list of available years in the drop-down menu and select Go.

If you want to adjust a year that does not appear in the list above, send the request to your tax centre in writing. There are certain restrictions about the type and complexity of returns that can be changed using the Internet.

You cannot use Change my return

  • to change:
    • a tax return that has not been assessed;
    • a tax return where 9 reassessments exist for a particular tax year;
    • a bankruptcy return;
    • a return prior to the year of bankruptcy;
    • carryback amounts such as capital or non-capital losses;
    • a return of an international or non-resident client (including deemed residents of Canada, newcomers to Canada, and individuals who left Canada during the year);
    • the elected split-pension amount; or
    • a return where you have income from a business with a permanent establishment outside your province or territory of residence (you have to complete Form T2203, Provincial and Territorial Taxes - Multiple Jurisdictions);
    • a return that was filed by the CRA under subsection 152(7).
  • to apply for the:
    • Canada Child Benefit (CCB);
    • Disability Tax Credit (DTC); or
    • goods and services tax/harmonized sales tax (GST/HST) credit.

In any of these cases, send both of the following to your tax centre:

  • A completed Form T1-ADJ, T1 Adjustment Request , or a signed letter providing the details of your request (including the years of the returns you want us to change), your social insurance number, your address, and a telephone number where we can reach you during the day; and
  • Supporting documents for the changes you want to make and, if you have not sent them to us before, supporting documents for your original claim.

Search T1 General

Enter a line number from the Income Tax and Benefit Return, such as "126", or text to describe the line you want to find, such as "rental income", and then select Search. From the search results list, select the line you want to go to, e.g., Go to line 126.

You can also select the tabs at the top of the page if you want to go to a specific section of the return, e.g., line 126 would be found under Income PAGE 2.

Change a line

If you use the Search feature, the cursor appears in the new amount box of the line that you want to change. Enter the dollar amount you want to show on CRA records after the change is complete.

If you do not use the Search feature, you can select the new amount box of the line you want to change and enter the dollar amount. If you do not see the line you want to change, use Select a line and select Go to add the line(s) you want to change.

Select Review and Submit Changes when you are finished.

Note:

  • The old amount represents the dollar amount currently showing on CRA records.
  • If you need help with income tax information, select Need help with these lines?
  • Select the tabs at the top of the page to make changes to lines on other section of the return.

Review Changes

If you do not provide all the information our processing and validating systems need, you may receive an error or warning message.

An error means that you must provide the information that is identified, or you will not be able to complete and submit your change.

A warning means that you may want to provide additional information if it applies to your tax situation.

Select Back if you want to make more changes.

Select Continue if you want to complete the review process.

Select Continue if you want to complete the review process.

Review Changes - Warning(s) detected!

Provide the identified information if it applies to your tax situation.

Select Back if you want to make more changes.

Select Continue if you want to complete the review process.

Submit and Certify Changes

The Submit Changes page summarizes the changes you have requested to the selected return(s).

  • Old amount - represents the dollar amount currently showing on CRA records
  • Change amount - represents the dollar amount of the increase or decrease you are requesting to the amount currently showing on CRA records
  • New amount - represents the dollar amount you want to show on CRA records after the change is complete

If you do not need to make further changes, read the Certification Statement, and select Accept. If you would like to make additional changes, select Make More Changes for the applicable year. If you would like to make changes to another year, select Select another year (when available).

Confirmation Number

Keep this confirmation number for your records and keep all your receipts and supporting documents in case we ask to see them.
