Area for which you are claiming the northern residents deduction is highlighted
Northern residence address (if different from current address) section is highlighted
Start and end dates of the northern residence section is highlighted
- List your places of residence
- Select the prescribed zone for which the individual is claiming the northern residents deduction.
- Enter the northern residence address for which the individual is making a claim, if different from their current address.
UFile tip
If an individual is unable to provide a specific street number or postal code, enter a description of where they are residing.
- Start and end dates of the northern residence
- Enter the dates the individual resided in the prescribed zone.
- Enter the number of days that the individual will claim for the basic and the additional residency amount.
- Scroll down.
UFile will not calculate the additional residency amount if you do not enter a number into the Number of days to consider for the additional residency amount field.

For the statement Northern area where you travelled, select the prescribed zone where the individual travelled, or where the person for whom they are claiming this deduction for travelled to. Select only:
- Zone A (Resident of a prescribed northern area),
- Zone B (Resident of a prescribed intermediate area), or
- Zone B (Resident of a prescribed intermediate area / Quebec – Zone A (Resident of prescribed northern area) (Îles-de-la-Madeleine).
- Once a selection is made, fields for Details of trips are generated on the same screen.

Deduction for travel benefits section
+ Add another button is highlighted
- Enter the name of the person who travelled: last name, comma and first name.
- Select the purpose of the trip: Medical reasons or Other.
- Enter the dates of the trip.
- Enter the destination: you may enter a city name only.
- To the statement Select the method to be used between the taxable benefit and the standard amount, select Let MaxBack decide (default) unless this individual claims part of the lump sum of $1,200 (at the provincial level: $1,200 if they lived in a prescribed northern area or $600 if they lived in a prescribed intermediate area) for themselves or for an eligible family member, while another individual is also claiming part of the lump sum for the same person for another trip.
- You must enter an amount, even if it is 0, into the following fields:
- 1 – Employee benefits with respect to northern travel
- 2 – Northern travel expenses (into one of the fields from this list)
- 3 – Lowest return air fare for the northern area travel, which is the lowest cost quoted for a flight from the airport closest to the individual’s residence to the nearest designated city (even if they did not actually travel by air or to that city).
- For each additional trip, click the + sign next to Add Another, and an additional Details of trips section will open.
- If the Details of trips section is for someone for whom the standard amount is being claimed (including the individual), and someone else is claiming a portion of the standard amount for the same person for another trip:
- Click the + sign next to Add Another.
- For the statement Northern area where you travelled, select Standard amount claimed by another person.

Next button is highlighted
- Enter the name of the person who travelled: last name, comma and first name.
- Enter the name of the other individual claiming a portion of the standard amount for this person.
- Enter the portion of the standard amount the other individual is claiming.
- Click Next.
- In the Other deductions section, click the ? sign next to Federal line 25500 – T2222 – Northern residents deduction.
